Mix of different types of wastes
Sustainable landfill is based on the idea that a correct mix of wastes, that neutralises each others’ negative effects, is disposed of. The biochemical process that starts up in the landfill site means a stable situation is created within a relatively short period of time that is relatively free of emission of hazardous substances.

In-situ stabilisation
On existing landfills wastes have not been selected with avoiding aftercare in mind. Especially on municipal solid waste landfills very often discharge from aftercare obligations can be achieved by means of in-situ stabilisation. The appropriate techniques for in-situ stabilisation are recirculation of water and injection of air. These techniques have proven to be effective. A remaining challenge is to develop a method with which sufficient stabilisation of the total waste body can accurately and reliably be demonstrated.
